Cashier Has No Clue Someone Is Secretly Recording, Her Actions Quickly Go Viral

Updated December 1, 2017

When a cashier at an Indiana grocery store saw a shopper in need, she showed amazing generosity. The kind moment was posted about on Facebook, as Gary Clark described what he had witnessed at the store, writing: “This girl is a cashier at Marsh on Kentucky Ave, her name is Janell. An elderly woman came through her line, did not have enough money.”

He continued: “This young lady took money out of her own pocket and paid half of her bill. Please share and let everyone know our youth is not a lost cause. I was proud to [have] witnessed it, Marsh should be proud to have her as an employee.”

Marsh’s SVP of Marketing and Advertising, David Palmer, said: “Marsh is proud to be local and part of the community. Our primary focus is service to our customers, and we are very proud to have an employee like Janell whose actions demonstrate a commitment to those values.”

Janell explained the situation to WTHR, saying: “She [the woman] was adamant on saying I didn’t have to, but at the same time I felt as if it was necessary because I didn’t want her to go hungry.”

She added, “To be honest, I don’t make a lot here, but, to me, money is just a material item and I don’t need material goods to be happy. Seeing others smile and seeing them happy is what makes me happy.”

Customer Terri Dunning said of the cashier: “She’s really a good, good person. She has a good soul. She has a like a beautiful soul. She really does.”

The exposure from the story even earned Janell a little something for her kindness: White Castle brought her balloons and a gift card to thank her.

Not surprisingly, the post went viral and the cashier earned praise from those commenting on the post, with notes such as: “Wow, thanks for sharing this story. Kudos to Jarnell at Marsh. Thanks for your kindness” and “She has my business!!”

Another commenter noted: “Thank you for sharing her story…I’m sure the elderly lady was grateful.”

Others noted that “There is good left in this world” and “The amount of shares just reinforces that people still love to see kindness in the world.”

Some commenters hoped the cashier would get some recognition from the store for her kindness, with one person writing: “There should be a lot of people like her in this World. Bless her heart what a good thing to do. Someone should call the manager, and let them know about her good deed. She at least deserves to be Employee of the Month.”

Another person wrote: “Thank you for sharing this Gary Clark. With all going on a true single act of generosity and kindness goes a long way. Maybe someone will be able or find themselves in a position to pay it forward. Maybe me, who knows.”

This commenter hoped that sharing Janell’s story would make her feel good about the kind act, noting: “I bet this made her feel really appreciated, thank you Gary for making her feel valued. She might not get that feeling a lot!”
