It’s Happened For The First Time In 137 Years, So They Buy A Billboard To Celebrate It

Updated November 3, 2017

Has any family in the history of the world had quite the baby gender streak as the Settles, who welcomed boys for 137 years, without one single girl in the mix?

When Kelen Settle discovered she was pregnant with a second child, she never could have imagined they would end the male baby streak. The couple set up a gender reveal to announce the news in a memorable way and were floored when they opened a box to  uncover bright pink balloons.

Kelen told Yahoo News: “That was a very shocking experience for me. I just assumed I was going to have another boy. I was like, ‘What’s going on? This just can’t be possible.’”

She added: “I was absolutely shocked. We had the whole family there. My mother just went nuts. My mom always wanted a daughter. She was absolutely ecstatic. She could not believe it.”

When Carter Louise Settle was born, their family and friends came by with gifts and flowers to celebrate the exciting arraival, but Will’s co-workers dreamed up the best gift of all.

The perfect birth announcement: the first female baby born to the family got her very own billboard!

They bought ad space for a billboard near the Settle’s house, which proudly displayed a photo of Carter, making her a bit of hometown celebrity, which is pretty impressive for a newborn.

Will told ABC News: “When I first saw it, it was an ‘Oh my God’ moment. It is so pink [and] so large. It’s pretty obnoxious, I hate to say. It is so in your face, you wouldn’t believe it.”

It’s a fitting gift for Will, who is the director of sales for Marlin Outdoor Advertising.

As for discovering the billboard, he explained: “I’m spending a lot of time at home so I’m not doing my usual sales route. The owner of the company said, ‘There’s a surprise for you between Bluffton and Savannah.’ He wanted me to drive down to Savannah and then turn around. The billboard is about half way. It’s right on the road.”

The family received a lot of texts and phone calls in response to the giant announcement, as Will noted one particularly funny comment: “My friend said, ‘What a great way to keep it low key.’”

As for their new arrival’s name choice, they explained that they wanted a “really strong name” that “you don’t hear every day.”

Will noted that with all the boys that have come before her, “She’s going to have to be strong with all the men she’ll deal with in the Settle family.”

Many people weighed in with comments on the story, including well wishes such as: “I see someone getting spoiled beyond imagination! Congrats to the Settle Family! Really a great story!” and “I love it – congratulations to them!”

Another person noted: “This is just the most adorable thing I have read in a long time. Congratulations to mom dad, and baby! God bless them all.”

One person pointed this little detail out: “Really sweet of his coworkers, but in the future it would probably be best to get parents’ permission first before putting their baby’s picture on a billboard.”
