Many American Latinos are converting their religious faith from Catholicism to Islam.
As the United States’ largest minority group, this shift could significantly impact the nation’s social and political norms.
Yusef Gallardo, a Latino convert, explained his conversion from Catholicism to Islam. He said the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 made him hate Muslims. It was not until he was forced to complete a project on the Islamic faith that he began to admire the religion.
While specific information on converts is limited, the U.S. estimates between 100,000 and 200,000 Latino Muslims live in America.
